New rules here at The English Studio Language school

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Hey guys,

I am sorry to take such a serious note on such a beautiful sunny evening, but it’s important you are aware of some important information regarding your English course here in London.

You must attend class at least 4 day per week. If you attend fewer than 4 days, your teacher will let me know. This means that we have the right to remove you from that class and put you into a different class.  If you continue to miss classes, I have to inform the HOME OFFICE. If you do not have a visa, we may take you out of your class and you risk losing your student oyster card.

If you have any questions or problem, please contact me at stuart@the-englishstudio.com

Have a nice evening and see you around the school.

Stuart

Learning English

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Hi There

Last week I  told you about the Student handbook , how useful it is with all important information you need to know to make your life simple at school . As we know, life in  London is very busy, and one problem with this is that everywhere we go we have to stand in a queue waiting to be served. At  The English Studio, we are  always trying to find  ways to make  things easier for you, and  have created this litle handbook with the information you need. You don’t need  to be in a queue waiting to be served anymore you just need to  read and check in your hand book. And with this you will save a lot of time,  improve your English grammar, vocabulary, and much more.  And I have a  piece of information for you students who came to London to learn English and go back to your Country and teach English, The English School is starting a Trinity accredited teacher training course. If you are interested come to our reception for more information. Make  learning English in London a great experience!

Intensive English course

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Time is tricky and life is crazy.

My grandma (the good one) used to say it took ages until she was finally 15 years old. Then, before she realized it, she was 65. Life went on at a much faster pace. And now I know what she means. We always say we don’t have enough time to do absolutely anything. There are lots of plans queuing on our list, jostling for priority. And sometimes they are so simple to carry out like going for a coffee with your workmates. Aren’t we just trying to do everything all at once without even considering if that’s what we really want?

Time is tricky and it makes life even crazier.

Maybe the key to succeed (or at least to reduce stress out of our lives) is to focus on what’s really important and do your best. Why should we learn how to speak 634 different languages if , at the end of all that work, we aren’t fluent in any of them? I am not completely happy learning how to say only “What’s your name?” or “How are you?” in another language (maybe “I’m hungry and have no money” would be much more useful!).

Time is trickier nowadays. And life goes bananas!

If you still insist on covering lots of different areas of knowledge, fine. Can I at least suggest an Intensive English course then?

The library is up and running!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

So fot the first time we have our own library room in Holborn! we’ve done our best to respond to feedback from our students, and put in some of the things they asked for:

a place to study

a place to use the net

a place to borrow and buy books

a place to copy, scan and fax important documents

we truly believe that listening to our customers is the way to making our school an even greater success- so let us know what you think!

Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

At The English Studio, we realise that we are not the only English School in London, but we do like to think that our centres are the best-value places to learn English and we also like to think that our English classes are the most enjoyable and useful in the capital.

However, you, dear students are not the only people to whom I am teaching English. My wife, Anastasia is Russian – and although her English is fluent, at proficiency level, she always insists that we have one English class every weekend.

There’s also a little man called John, who is the blindingly beautiful sunshine of our lives – and will be two years old on the fourth of August (sharing his birthday with Barack Obama!) Frustratingly for me, the first language my son will speak is Russian, because that is the language he hears all day from his mummy and his au pair, but it doesn’t stop me from trying to teach him basic English. At the moment he can say ‘five’ and can nearly say ‘bus’ – and for the moment I’m proud of that. He can also make a good stab at the syllabic rhythm of The Hokey Cokey, Manna Manna and Hugga Wugga – his favourite You Tube clips – which means that papa doesn’t get to enjoy his computer as much as he used to!

However, John also has a serious Oedipus complex and when he’s in the room I cannot hug or kiss or even hold my darling wife’s hand without him letting go an ear-splitting scream like that kid in The Tin Drum by Gunther Grass (Apologies to my German students if i got the spelling wrong!)

When he’s naughty, he’s really really naughty, but if he sees that I am angry and say ‘Kravat’ ( a phonetic approximation of the Russian word for bed) he rushes over and kisses me and, naturally , my heart melts.

The only problem is what I am beginning to call ‘The Oedipal Virus’. If he gets ill, I get ill and twice in the past month the poor little thing has had a chest infection, which he has passed on to me. Yesterday, we were both at home, feeling sorry for ourselves and coughing like consumptives.

His granny , my mum, recently told me, ‘ Michael, until you were two, you were never without a cold,’ and history (or genetics) seems to be repeating itself. So let’s hope that after the President’s birthday celebrations have finished, my susceptibility to my son’s ubergerms will have done so too. It’s good to be back!

Learn English, speak English, read English, Walk English?

Friday, April 17th, 2009

It’s a subject that I have become rather boring on of late, but I need to repeat to you that listening to and singing along with songs can help you to improve your English. I know this because of my own experience of going to Madrid many years ago, with absolutely no idea how to speak the language. One of the things that helped me gain some understanding of the language was the music of Mecano. I know a lot of Spanish students might laugh at the idea but the point was that I loved their tunes, arrangements and Ana Torroja’s voice so much that I listened to their songs over and over and, indeed, over again. I soon found myself using phrases from their songs: Hoy no me puedo levantar being a common Saturday morning favourite!

And what of your own experience? Well, I’m sure that in many of your cases it was (oh no, here he goes again!) The Beatles who performed a similar service for you.

Their story is in fact as fascinating as their music was and since last year, I have been conducting occasional Beatles Walking tours, called , ‘Let me take you down.’

We visit the places in the capital where the fab four made history, singing their songs and even dropping into some of the pubs they used on the way!

Naturally, the tour finishes at the iconic pedestrian crossing outside the EMI studios on Abbey Road .The coolest thing about this is that there is a 24hour webcam positioned right beside the studios so you can get your family simply to log onto http://www.abbeyroad.co.uk/visit/ and you can wave at them in Brazil or Turkey or Japan and they can see what a great time you’re having in London!

The whole tour costs a fiver ( and you will need to make one tube journey, so bring your oyster card) and lasts from 11am to around 6pm, including lots of extra information about hidden London that you would otherwise never find out about! It’s a great day out and I’m looking forward to  seeing you at Hyde Park

Corner  Tube Exit no.1 at 11am on Sunday the 19th of April.Let me take you down………….

Studying English and having fun in London!!!!

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

With the Easter holiday just around the corner, most of you are planning what you are gonig to do or where you’re going to go. I myself am going spend a few days on the south coast to visit family (I hope the weather is nice).

This morning, my students invited me to one of my favourite places in the UK, Thorpe Park. “What is this place?” I hear you say. Well, it’s one of the greatest theme parks you can find here in the UK and it is really close to London. You can find all kinds of rides and rollercoasters. Whether you are a thrill seeker who loves the adrenaline of near-death experiences, or you prefer the calmer water rides, there is something for you. Here is a photo of my favourite ride, Nemesis Inferno!!!

Last year I took my students there and we had an amazing day. I’m sure we can top that next week.

See you after the holidays!!! Have a great Easter
